You are now a permanent resident in Canada – you have access to free healthcare, the right to work, live and study in Canada, and are protected by the Canadian charter of rights and freedoms. What is the next step?
The next step in your journey of obtaining your Canadian dream is the final step; Canadian citizenship. In addition to the rights you currently possess, Canadian Citizenship grants you the right to a Canadian passport, the right to political participation, and the removal of residency obligations. Canadian citizenship is your ticket to complete and total freedom.
How Can you achieve Canadian citizenship?
There are three different avenues available to achieve Canadian citizenship.
For those that initially held citizenship in a different country, the most common way to achieve Canadian citizenship is through Naturalization. Naturalization is also known as a “grant of citizenship.” Through this approach, an individual receives Canadian citizenship because they have fulfilled the mandatory requirement of being a permanent resident and meet other crucial factors such as completing a language test and passing a citizenship examination.
Another way to obtain Canadian citizenship is by right of blood. Individuals who qualify for this avenue of Canadian citizenship are born outside Canada to a Canadian citizen parent.
Lastly, being born in Canada automatically grants you Canadian citizenship.
Canada also recognizes and accepts dual citizenship! Dual citizenship is the ability to be granted Canadian citizenship while still being a citizen of your country of origin or previous country of residence.
Conditions to become a Canadian citizen
• Be a permanent resident
• Lived in Canada for three out of the last five years
• Have filed your taxes
• Pass a citizenship test
• Prove your language skills
Minor children applying for a grant of citizenship with a parent are also entitled to Canadian citizenship so long as they meet all requirements. Their application and eligibility requirements differ from their parent.
Benefits of a Canadian citizenship
Political benefits
Citizens can vote in all elections, run for offices, and get involved in political activities.
Canada offers dual citizenship
You won’t lose the citizenship of your former country. You can hold both your previous and new citizenship status.
Right to do all jobs
Once you have become a Canadian citizen, all the jobs and work restrictions are lifted, allowing you to seek employment and be employed by any Canadian establishment.
Passport
Canadian citizens obtain a passport that is easy to renew and must be renewed less often than a permanent resident card. Since a Canadian passport is globally recognized, you can travel anywhere with it.
Your children
As a citizen, your children born in Canada automatically become Canadians by birth. They won’t undergo any application process. Children born outside Canada are also citizens at birth if at least one parent was born or naturalized in Canada.
Tax
Canadians are taxed based on residency instead of citizenship. You can be a citizen but not live in Canada and therefore not pay Canadian taxes. If you are a citizen who lives in Canada, you must pay taxes on all your earnings within or outside of Canada.
What Can Cause Revocation Citizenship?
You can lose your Canadian citizenship if you are guilty of any of the following crimes.
• Immigration or Citizenship fraud
• Lying or withholding information on a Citizenship Application
• Terrorism or treason
